NEED A NEW MATTRESS? HOW TO GET THROUGH ALL THE HYPE AND SELECT THE RIGHT MATTRESS FOR YOU

First of a series.

The starting point…

So, you need a new mattress. You want something that will be comfortable, give you great support and won’t break the bank. So, where do you start?

First of all, in what position do you usually sleep? On your back? Side? Stomach? The answer to this will put you at the right starting point. Back sleepers are usually most comfortable on mattresses that are labeled “plush” (the softer side of your comfort spectrum) or “cushion firm” (the firmer range of comfort for a back sleeper). If you are a side sleeper, you, typically, are more comfortable on a softer surface, so your selections would include “plush”, “ultra-plush” and “pillow-top”. This is because your hip and shoulder need a little more “give” in order for you to minimize pressure-points and keep your back in proper alignment. If you sleep on your stomach, then you need a firmer mattress to keep your back from bowing-in. A “cushion-firm”, “firm” or “extra-firm_ would be your preference.

Next, you should check the coil-count on a conventional inner-spring mattress and the density of the foam on a memory foam or latex mattress. The higher the coil-count and the foam density, the more durable and supportive the mattress will be. Also, what is the warranty on the mattress? You should look for a 10 year non-pro-rated warranty on a mattress that you will be using every night. Sure, lots of people tell you, “The warranty isn’t that important”, and in some ways they’re right. But, it just stands to reason that the longer a manufacturer is willing to back a product, the better they will build it. Longer than 10 years is usually just hype. Let’s face it—it’s a ‘soft good’—it’s not going to last forever!

Next time, we’ll cover the characteristics of the various types of mattresses—inner spring, foam and air and what to look for in each one.
